Community Service

The Humane Society of Boulder Valley provides opportunities for individuals ages 15 and older to complete community service hours for school, court-ordered community service, or Workforce Boulder County. When you complete your community service at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley (HSBV) you will volunteer alongside shelter staff with our Animal Care Team (ACT) and will not have any hands-on contact with the animals. On-the-job training is provided by our shelter staff during your first volunteer shift.

Our Animal Care Team (ACT) provides critical care for shelter dogs through daily kennel cleaning. Our ACT volunteers roll up their sleeves and clean with us to leave our dogs with a clean, dry and comfortable place to spend their day. Volunteers should be capable of bending, scooping, lifting, and standing for extended periods of time. Shifts are available seven days a week from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

As part of the community service application process, we require a volunteer fee. If you are 18 years of age or older, you must complete an authorization to run a criminal background check, and the results must be approved by HSBV, before you can start volunteering. Most background checks are complete within 3 days of your authorization. If you have questions about which specific circumstances may preclude you from completing your community service hours at HSBV, please contact the Volunteer Services Department at volunteer@boulderhumane.org or 303-442-4030 option 7.
